Canada is one of the most popular study destinations for Indian students — not just for the quality of education, but because it offers one of the clearest pathways from student to permanent resident. Here's exactly how it works in 2025.
The most common route for Indian students to get Canadian PR follows three stages:
Complete a degree or diploma at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Choose a STEM, business, or healthcare program for better job prospects.
After graduation, apply for a PGWP — valid for up to 3 years. Work for any Canadian employer, anywhere in Canada.
Work full-time in Canada for at least 1 year in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 job — this makes you eligible for Express Entry or PNP.
Submit your PR application through Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. Processing time: 6–12 months.
| Program Length | PGWP Duration |
|---|---|
| 8 months – 2 years | Equal to program length |
| 2 years or more | 3 years (maximum) |
| Short programs under 8 months | Not eligible for PGWP |
After 1 year of Canadian work experience on your PGWP, you can apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream under Express Entry.
Your CRS score determines when you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR. For CEC candidates, scores are typically in the 430–500 range. Factors that boost your score:
Many provinces actively recruit international graduates. A Provincial Nomination adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing a PR invitation. Popular PNPs for students:
| Stage | Typical Duration |
|---|---|
| Study in Canada | 2 years (Masters) |
| PGWP application & approval | 2–5 months |
| Gain 1 year work experience | 12 months |
| Express Entry pool wait time | 3–12 months |
| PR application processing | 6–12 months |
| Total from start of study to PR | 4–5 years |
