How to Get Canadian PR After Studying in Canada — Complete 2025 Pathway

April 2025  ·  11 min read  ·  By Alone Walker's Overseas

Canada is one of the most popular study destinations for Indian students — not just for the quality of education, but because it offers one of the clearest pathways from student to permanent resident. Here's exactly how it works in 2025.

The Study → Work → PR Pathway

The most common route for Indian students to get Canadian PR follows three stages:

1

Study in Canada (2–4 years)

Complete a degree or diploma at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Choose a STEM, business, or healthcare program for better job prospects.

2

Get Your Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

After graduation, apply for a PGWP — valid for up to 3 years. Work for any Canadian employer, anywhere in Canada.

3

Gain Canadian Work Experience (1 year)

Work full-time in Canada for at least 1 year in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 job — this makes you eligible for Express Entry or PNP.

4

Apply for Permanent Residency

Submit your PR application through Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. Processing time: 6–12 months.

Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) — Key Facts

Program LengthPGWP Duration
8 months – 2 yearsEqual to program length
2 years or more3 years (maximum)
Short programs under 8 monthsNot eligible for PGWP
💡 Choose Your Program Wisely A 2-year Masters or a 3-year bachelor's gives you the maximum 3-year PGWP. A 1-year Masters gives only 1-year PGWP — less time to gain the work experience needed for PR. We always recommend 2-year programs for students with PR as a goal.

Express Entry — Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

After 1 year of Canadian work experience on your PGWP, you can apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream under Express Entry.

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score

Your CRS score determines when you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR. For CEC candidates, scores are typically in the 430–500 range. Factors that boost your score:

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) — Faster Route

Many provinces actively recruit international graduates. A Provincial Nomination adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing a PR invitation. Popular PNPs for students:
